Pecans (Carya illinoensis)

Pecans (Carya illinoensis)

Pecans

Beautiful trees can live for 300+ years and grow 70 feet tall and wide, making a spectacular and popular shade tree. They have very pretty luxuriant green foliage and produce delicious and very nutricious nuts that are harvested in the fall, usually October. Native from far south in Mexico up through many of the gulf staes to southern Illinois and Iowa. Nuts ripen best in areas with hot summers. There is a big difference in hardiness and ealiness of ripening between the different types, and as such is important to plant hardy short season cultivars in northern areas. Plant at least 2 for pollination. Hardy zones 5-9.
