Traditionally eaten fresh, in preserves, dried for tea, or made into wine, the fruits are also highly regarded as a herbal tonic for the heart. Quite ornamental it is cultivated as a hedge plant in England. Abundant white flowers are also medicinal and are used for teas and liquors, and ripen into red fruits in the fall. Used as a rootstock for grafted hawthorns. Hardiness zones 4b-9.
