Saccharum officinarum ‘Pele’s Smoke’ is an ornamental and edible sugar cane named after the Hawaiian volcano goddess Pele. The foliage is dark purple to black if grown in full sun. The cane will quickly grow 7 to 10+ feet tall. The blades of grass can grow 2 to 3 feet long and are held up on large stems that look similar to bamboo. The plant looks very ornamental if the bottom sections are cleaned off to make it look more like a a dark bamboo. The stalks are a bit thinner and taller than standard sugarcane.

About Sugarcane

You want it and we got it! Grow your own sugar and ween yourself off that high fructose corn syrup poison! Sugarcane is a beautiful tall grass that can reach over 8 ft tall. It is hardy to zone 8b and can tolerate wet conditions. Once established you can root new plants from mature can stalks to grow your sugar stash! Great addition to a greywater system (as sugarcane will thrive under wet conditions). This plant will set your perennial food forest apart!
