Roles & Responsibilities
Customer Service
● Welcome and assist customers in a friendly and informed manner.
● Advise customers on plant selection and care based on environmental conditions, watering needs, and sunlight exposure.
● Answer questions about plant varieties, gardening tools, and products.
● Provide knowledgeable support to both novice and experienced gardeners.
Plant Care & Maintenance
● Water, prune, deadhead, and fertilize plants based on species-specific needs.
● Monitor for pests, diseases, or signs of plant stress and apply appropriate remedies.
● Ensure accurate labeling and signage for plant names, prices, and care instructions.
Merchandising & Display
● Design and maintain aesthetically pleasing plant and product displays.
● Create seasonal or thematic presentations to promote sales and education.
● Maintain cleanliness and visual appeal throughout the retail nursery.
Nursery & Facility Upkeep
● Keep nursery pathways, greenhouses, and work areas clean and safe.
● Weed, sweep, and perform light landscaping tasks as needed.
● Properly store tools, chemicals, and equipment; report any damage or safety concerns.
● Assist in maintaining irrigation systems.
Inventory Support
● Receive and unpack plant and product shipments.
● Track and report inventory levels and plant conditions to supervisors.
● Rotate and restock plants and merchandise to ensure product quality and availability.
Administrative Tasks
● Operate the point-of-sale system to process purchases and handle payments.
● Update care guides, price tags, and promotional signage.
● Document plant loss, care issues, or equipment needs.
● Support occasional workshops, events, or community education programs
Desired Skills & Experience
● Prior experience or general knowledge of plant care is preferred.
● Spanish-speaking monolingual candidates are welcome; English proficiency is not required.
● Ability to perform physical labor outdoors, including lifting up to 50 lbs and working in various weather conditions.
● Willingness to learn and share knowledge with coworkers and customers.
● Strong interpersonal and communication skills; capable of engaging respectfully with a diverse community.
● Reliable, self-directed, and punctual.
● Comfort with using mobile devices and basic apps for timekeeping and communication.
● A commitment to Planting Justice’s mission of food sovereignty, community healing, and environmental justice.
● Bilingual in English and Spanish is a plus, but not required.
Compensation
● Planting Justice offers a competitive pay rate and benefits package including generous PTO. Our base pay starts at $20 an hour.
