Come Visit Our New Seed Library!
Texto en Español a continuación.
Planting Justice's Sobrante Park Nursery is now home to SPARK Seeds, a brand new seed lending library! The seeds you and the community borrow from this seed library are lent to you for FREE. We just ask that when you get a successful harvest, you save seeds and return them to this library so that we can keep Sobrante Park a resilient neighborhood.
This seed library is located in a white tent in front of the yurt at the Nursery (319 105th Ave., Oakland, CA 94603) and is available for the entire community to use. The seeds that you return keep the library self-sustaining. The more seeds in the library, the more members of our community can experience the pleasures of growing their own food!
When you participate in the seed library, you help create a culture of sharing and abundance! The seeds you borrow from this seed library are lent to you for free. Why Save Seeds?
Humans have been saving seeds for over 12,000 years. In our culture, much of that knowledge has been lost over the last hundred years, along with plant diversity. When you grow and save your own seeds, you:
- Preserve and increase seed diversity
- Increase food access
- Save money
- Adapt plants to the local, changing climate
- Encourage ecosystem stability
- Increase self-reliance and resilience
- Preserve and increase vital seed diversity
- Maintain cultural history of culinary and agricultural traditions
- Protect and preserve pollinators
- Grow more delicious, fresh, healthy food
- Adapt plants to the local, changing climate
How to use SPARK Seeds:
1. Using the Donation Info Sheet, fill out a container for each type of seed you plan to take.
2. Put seeds in containers. Take 2-3 seeds for every plant you intend to grow this season.
3. When you get a successful harvest, save seeds and return them to this library.
