Fifty full-time staff are employed at Planting Justice. We’re not your typical nonprofit hires; many of us didn’t go to college, didn’t have resumes that could get us hired, and many of us have been previously incarcerated. Our jobs offer a combination of dignified land-based work with pay well above federal and state minimum wage, full benefits, healthy work environments, and connection to resources, supports, and community partners. Since we are community-based, our co-workers are also are neighbors. And for some of us, our co-workers are also our family.
Addressing Barriers to Employment
People who have been impacted by food and economic injustice often have barriers to employment and are discriminated against, yet also have valuable skillsets and lived experience not typically recognized as relevant work experience. We hire people hyper-locally whenever possible, and provide full health benefits for staff and their children along with a host of connections to resources and support services so that people can stay in Oakland and provide for their families. We are striving to meet the living wage threshold for Alameda County for all staff, but recognize that due to rising costs of living and inflation, we currently fall between the local minimum wage and living wage for most staff.
