Large upright vigorous bushes possess a magical charm and attractive foliage. Dark blue/black Fruits and large lacy creamy white flowers are very healthful and used medicinally for colds and fevers. Fruits also make rich and wild flavored jams, wine, syrups and pies. Flowers can be used to make Elderberry fritters and the wood was traditionally used by Native Americans to make flutes. Plants bloom and fruit abundantly over a long season. Elderberries are known to stimulate soil microbes and are traditionally planted next to compost piles.
Grows 6-8ft and is hardy to "30.
American varieties are best pollinated by other American varieties and European varieties are best pollinated by another European variety.
