Yellow Newtown Pippin Apple aka Albemarle Pippin (Malus domestica) is another great classic old time American apple originating in Newtown, NY early in the 18th century. Said to be George Washington's favorite apple, it was also highly praised by apple connoisseur Thomas Jefferson. Medium to large bright green to yellow round fruit has juicy, crisp, tender, aromatic and sub-acid to tart yellow flesh. Good quality for desserts and cider. Excellent keeper it fills the gap for fresh apples from February through May. Still grown commercially in New York and is popular in California and the Pacific Northwest. Vigorous and productive tree is hardy zones 4-8.
