Chinese Hawthorn (Crataegus pinnatifida) is known as Shan Zha in China and is highly esteemed for its abundant crops of 1” diameter round red fruit. Sweet and flavorful they are eaten fresh or dried, used for preserves and candied. They are also used in traditional Chinese medicine for heart conditions. Small tree is attractive with large clusters of white flowers in spring followed by the red fruit in fall. The variety Red Sun is prized for its large and tasty fruit. Hardy to zone 5.
