Also known as Purple Passionflower or Apricot Vine, Maypop is native to the Eastern U.S. The hardy vines tops freeze back in late fall, and then sprout vigorous new shoots from the ground in mid-spring. Large, intricate, purple and white flowers in July are followed by egg size tasty fruits that are eaten fresh and used for drinks, jams and jellies. Its fruits are similar to Passiflora edulis and are considered a replacement for it in northern areas. Also relished by many types of wildlife and the larvae of several butterfly species. The whole plant is said to be useful as a relaxant and sleep enhancer in herbal medicine. Hardy zones 5 to 9.
