Heavily productive of sweet tasty berries Sugarberry trees have been cherished since ancient times. The Greek writer Homer wrote that one taste of them in a foreign land was enough to make a man never want to go home. Native Americans ground the fruit and pit together to make a paste that they baked. Said to be high in calcium and 20% protein. Berries can also be eaten off the seed, but the fruit flesh is thin, though very tasty. Fast growing trees are very tough and endure challenging situations, growing best with adequate moisture. Native to the east coast, west to Texas and south to northern Mexico. Hardy zones 5-9.
