Evergreen leguminous tree produces large one -foot long dark brown sweet pods that are chewed on by children or ground to a flour and used to make a delicious and nutritious addition to baked goods and ice-cream. Sometimes considered to be a healthy chocolate substitute, carob is really a gourmet food all its own. Also known as St. John"s Bread, Carob forms an unusually dense multi-stemmed or if pruned single trunk tree, with dark glossy green leaves that are bright red at the growing tips. Extremely drought tolerant and long lived trees can take high heat and are cold hardy down to 18 degrees Plant at least two for pollination. Zones 8-10.
