Allium × proliferum

This a rare brown skinned walking onion known as Brown Catawissa Walking Onion. We got it from our from Dan, who got it from a member of Seed Savers Exchange 20 years ago. His description reads "Height is about three feet to the first cluster of bulbils and it often grows a second tier with more bulbils on the end of that. Bulbils are pointy or round with the largest about 3/4" across. Clusters of bulbils can be all small, all large, or a mix. The secondary clusters at higher nodes are usually just a few bulbils or a single one. Some stalks will grow a third tier but usually without bulbils at the end. Flavor is good. Unbothered by pests except for moles/voles which will eat the bulbs in the ground. Presumably hardy to at least zone 5 but I don't have proof of that because I'm 7a/b here."

Hardy, perennial walking onion also known as Tree Onion. This walking onion forms small topset bulbs that cause that fall over and easily root so the onion spreads or walks thru your garden year after year. The greens can be used in place of green onions and the the base can be used in place of onion. An amazingly hardy and fun food forest plant perfect for a large pot or your backyard garden. 1 plant turns into many plants after the 1st year, so share with your friends! Hardy in zones 3–9. This variety has a red topset bulb. We also offer a brown and white version (coming soon: heritage white top-setting onion)
