Black Gilliflower is an heirloom variety that produces a long and conical fruit with a dry, dark red skin. Also known as Sheepnose apple due to its unique shape, this apple is something of an acquired taste for fresh eating. More commonly used to apple sauce, it is either loved or hated for it's distinctive aroma and flavor as a fresh apple (let us know what you think!). Ripens mid-fall and best when picked off the tree before becoming too ripe. Can also be a great food source for wildlife as the fruit, when left unpicked, can hang onto the limbs well into winter. Not self fertile - needs a pollen source nearby. Zones 3-9
