European Chestnut (Castanea sativa) From mature groves planted by early homesteaders here in our hometown of Orleans. Very productive of medium size nuts that have an excellent sweet flavor. Makes a large, healthy and beautiful long lived tree. Not resistant to chestnut blight, but highly recommended in the western US states where it is not present. Native to southern Europe, northern Africa and and western Asia. Can grow 40 to 100 feet tall. Resistant to oak root fungus. Plant 2 for pollination.
