Hauer Pippin Apple (Malus sp.) is a classic super late ripening northern California apple can hang on the tree in excellent shape till Christmas time and store on the back porch even longer. Large, flat-round, hard, juicy, sweet-tart and spicy, highly flavored fruit is greenish with light dots and a rich orange-red blush. A heavy bearer this old time favorite is still grown commercially in the Watsonville, CA area. Original tree was found as a seedling growing near Aptos, in Santa Cruz County California by Peter Hauer in the 1890's. Said to be a cross of Cox's Orange Pippin and Yellow Bellflower, it is a very hardy, disease and insect resistant variety that is now being planted more extensively by organic and direct sale farmers. Excellent for fresh eating, juice, hard cider, baking and sauce. One of our favorite varieties that we look forward to every year here at the farm. Back in its heyday it was called Christmas Apple. Hardy zones 5-10.
