Vasconcellea pubescens var Jamie
This is a selection from Santa Cruz Rare Fruit Growers named "Jamie" from which we grew out our seedlings from that fruit. A little tastier than the standard mountain papaya and is a super hardy variety of papaya native to the northwestern Andes Mountains in South America. It produces a fruit the size of a softball with seeds in it. The fruit does not taste like traditional papaya, but can be used green as a vegetable, eaten ripe as a refreshing slightly acidic fruit, or made into a candy including the skin. It can also be used as a rootstock to graft tropical papaya onto to increase cold hardiness. Our plants are grown from seed we harvest onsite from our mother trees and therefore seedlings are unsexed and can be male, female, or hermaphroditic. Plants can grow over 20ft tall and side shoots can be cloned.
