The Salmonberry is a member of the rose family (Rosaceae) and is very similar to a raspberry in size and shape. However, it's fruit is somewhat different to that of a strawberry. Its fruit color is yellow, orange, or red. The berries of the salmonberry ripen from early May to late July in most of the Pacific Northwest. The Salmonberry produces perennial, not biennial, woody stems that are covered with fine prickles. Thankfully, the stems are not as densely armed with thorns as some other fruiting shrubs, this makes for an enjoyable harvest.
