Native to Southern Europe this small tree can grow up to 25 feet tall. Traditionally eaten fresh, in preserves, dried for tea, or made into wine, the fruits are also highly regarded as an herbal tonic for the heart. Quite ornamental it is cultivated as a hedge plant. Abundant white flowers are also medicinal and are used for teas and liquors, and ripen into red fruits in the fall. Used as a rootstock for grafted hawthorns. Hardiness zones 4b-9.
