Far more vigorous, faster growing, easier to root clone of Black Madeira. Plants grow 2-3 times speed of DFIC 144 Black Madeira. Figs essentially identical to "true" Black Madeira but with much less fuss.

Common self-fertile fig producing dark medium-sized fruits. Black/purple-black skin, red strawberry-jam flesh. Intense dark berry jam flavor, very concentrated sweetness, thick chewy skin, seed crunch. Perfect balance when dead-ripe (very soft, drooping). Widely reported very similar to Black Madeira, often ripens earlier. Long hang time compared to many varieties. Late season (September-November).

Discovered 2008 in Point Loma, San Diego from a gardeners 50-year-old tree. May be same as Violeta variety from Madeira Island. Introduced to fig community as more vigorous alternative to Black Madeira. Some claim identical, others note subtle differences in growth habit (Preto grows more squat, BM reaches upward). Quickly became popular for accessibility and quality.
