Spitzenberg Apple aka Esopus Spitzenberg (Malus domestica) is a classic 18th century American winter apple is excellent for fresh eating, cider and all culinary purposes. Said to be Thomas Jeffersons favorite apple. The fruit is medium to large, roundish and a very attractive bright red. Flesh is of excellent quality, yellow, crisp, juicy and aromatic, with a sprightly sub-acid flavor. Spreading, moderately vigorous tree originated in Esopus, NY and is hardy from zones 4-8.
