Upright tree. Self-infertile, requires cross-pollination from compatible variety for adequate fruit set (Bartlett, Bosc, Comice). Partially self-fruitful but cross-pollination significantly increases yields. Hardy, cold-hardy, drought-resistant once established. Generally disease resistant, easy to grow.

Blooms April, mid-season bloom, late season bloomer. Medium to large pear, short-necked egg-shaped, wide globular base, short stem, thin skin with notable lenticels. Green Anjou: pale green skin that does not change color as pear ripens (unusual for green pears, most turn yellow). Red Anjou: dark red color, very similar to original Anjou other than color. White flesh, firm juicy flesh, abundant juices, sweet brisk flavor, buttery flesh.

Originated Belgium early 19th century. Introduced US 1842. Early plantings concentrated in New England, particularly around Boston and Salem Massachusetts. Gained favor among orchardists for reliability. Accelerated adoption across Northeast after 1852 American Pomological Society recommendation. Adapted well to local climates.
