Toka Hybrid Plum

Small hybrid plum tree with upright vase-shaped habit and dense canopy clothed in pointy emerald green leaves. Fast-growing vigorous very ornamental variety. Vigorous upright growth, somewhat comparable in size to Alderman. Self-fertile/self-pollinating though may benefit from pollination partners. Excellent pollinizer for both Japanese plums and native plums (but not European plums). Partners well with Superior hybrid plum.

Small to medium-sized red fruit with yellow flesh, bright red to reddish-purple pointed purple-red plums. Reddish-gold to deep red skin with pink blush, medium to large. Juicy amber to golden yellow flesh. Freestone when ripe with small oval-shaped pit, semi-clingstone in some descriptions. Intensely aromatic with candy-like sweetness, so sweet spicy and fragrant commonly called "Candy Plum" or "Bubblegum Plum" due to flavor and smell bearing uncanny resemblance to bubblegum. Distinctly candy-like flavor, perfumed sweetness never fails to impress.

Introduced 1911 from South Dakota Experiment Station. Still dependably sets fruit in South Dakota where developed. Beautiful golden-yellow fall color provides ornamental bonus. Considered specialty plum, very uniquely flavored, highly aromatic, great pollinizer, but will require tree size and disease management.
