Bred 1941 at research stations in Niigata and Okayama, Japan. Shinko produces large round fruit, golden-brown russeted skin with tiny white speckles. Crisp, juicy, very sweet flesh with butterscotch/caramel flavor. Ripens late September. Stores 2-3 months. Requires cross-pollination with Hosui, Chojuro, Kikusui, or Bartlett. Highly productive.

Cross between Amanogawa and Nijisseiki varieties. Won Sunset Magazine taste test. Known as "Butterscotch Pear." One of most fire blight-resistant Japanese pear varieties. Widely grown in Haruna district (Gunma Prefecture, Japan) along Haruna Fruit Road.
