Vigorous productive tree with ornamental value, graceful canopy of green foliage, beautiful white blossoms in spring attracting pollinators. Relatively easy to cultivate, minimal maintenance once established, good resilience to common pests.

Glossy green skin heavily mottled with maroon when ripe. Nearly freestone dark red to vibrant red flesh surrounding small pit. Firm meaty yet juicy texture. Sweet juicy plums with pleasantly tart skin, rich aromatic flavor, excellent lingering flavor. Delightful blend of sweetness and tanginess creating well-balanced taste. Not self-fertile - requires pollinizer such as Catalina, Nubiana, Santa Rosa, Methley or other Japanese plums for cross-pollination and optimal fruit production.

Possibly descended from Satsuma plum. Named "Mariposa" (Spanish for butterfly). Became parent variety influencing development of other popular cultivars. Listed in Slow Food Foundation's Ark of Taste as traditional product worth preserving. Thrives in regions with mild winters and hot summers, particularly Mediterranean climates like California.
