A very reliable and delicious plum, Methley can set a crop in rainy springs when most others fail. Strong growing trees bear heavily and are disease and insect resistant, and easy to care for. They are self fertile and make a good pollinator for other varieties. Purple red fruit is sweet, very juicy and has a tasty distinct flavor, ripening early. Excellent for fresh eating, and can be made into fruit leather, sorbet, juices and jellies. Has a low chilling requirement of approximately 150 chill hours making it a good choice for southern gardens as well as northern. Said to be a cross of Japanese and a Myrobalan plum it is hardy zones 5 through 9.
