Thimbleberry (Rubus parviflorus)

Native of Western North America from Alaska east to Ontario and Michigan, and south through California all the way to Western Mexico. Grows from sea level up north to elevations of 8,000+ feet in the south part of it's range. A very attractive plant with showy white flowers in the spring, large maple like soft leaves, and pretty red to purple fruits in the summer, making it an excellent addition to the edible landscape garden. Usually grows as a low spreading mound, but can get to 8 feet tall in good conditions. Very popular with certain birds and butterflies as well as being a staple of bears and other wildlife. Fruit is good for fresh eating and makes excellent jam which is sold in some locations where it is abundant in the wild. Very pest free it can grow in sun or part shade and is hardy from zones 3-8.
