Roles & Responsibilities

Assist in the management of our four-acre orchard in El Sobrante for a minimum 8 months expanding the collection beyond its current 1,200 varieties of fruiting and medicinal plants.  Individuals rotate through defined roles on the farm which will include:

  • Assess individual tree & plant health
  • Fruit tree & shrub care + pruning
  • Organic weed management
  • Planting almost year round
  • Make and apply soil fertility amendments
  • Integrated pest management 
  • Irrigation system development and repair
  • Harvest and processing of produce and plant material 
  • Develop & maintain on-farm infrastructure; fences, structures, etc
  • Support weekly volunteer days, educational activities, and other public events
  • Maintain farm records related to, plant care practices, and harvest
  • Support value added processing of farm produce
  • Operate and maintain  farm tools, and small engines.
  • Implement PJ cover crop strategy and beneficials
  • Support health & well being of coworkers
  • Willingness to participate in conflict resolution and receive and provide feedback to coworkers
  • Participate in PJ organizational staff meetings, prepared and on time.

Ideal applicants will have a strong commitment to land based healing and restoration, as well as indigenous land sovereignty and be committed to anti-oppression work; social, racial, gender, and economic justice.

  • Understanding of challenges in the food system and food justice efforts aiming to dismantle systems of oppression 
  • 2+ years experience organizing in a social justice setting
  • Ability to lift 50 pounds on the daily and move through sloped and uneven terrain 
  • Reliable personal transportation due to limited means of public transportation available in accessing the farm 
  • 2+ years experience in farm, orchard or large-scale garden management
  • Strong plant ID skills, especially CA natives and fruiting trees and shrubs
  • Strong administrative, organizational, and record-keeping skills
  • Proficiency using Google Suite applications for record keeping and planning
  • Ability to work cooperatively with a team and delegate farm tasks daily
  • Ability to inspire and build momentum with coworkers and volunteers
  • Positive outlook and comfortable working in a fast-paced environment
  • Willingness to give and receive feedback; to grow in a collaborative environment


• Salaries at PJ are set through our transparent pay chart. Starting wage at PJ is $20/hr with 3% annual increases until the position cap is met. Equivalent to minimum salary of $41,600/year with 40 hour work week. (negotiable based on previous experience)

• Benefits begin 60 - 90 days after the date of hire. 
1) Benefits include 4 weeks paid time off plus 8 paid annual holidays,
2) Health care plus dental, vision, life insurance and chiropractic coverage.
3) Annual professional development stipend of $500, plus other paid training opportunities.


This position is full-time at Planting Justice (36-40 hours/week), preferably Monday-Friday plus one Saturday/month (currently usually the Second Saturday) in exchange for a weekday.
