Desert King Fig

San Pedro type fig discovered near Madera, California around 1930, propagated by Sisto Pedrini and distributed by King Fig Plantation, San Francisco. Top-rated variety for Pacific Northwest and cool climates, producing abundant yellowish-green figs with sweet strawberry-colored flesh. Highly productive with reliable heavy breba crop ripening mid-summer, tolerates late spring frosts better than other varieties.

Breba crop only ripens reliably in cool-summer regions (main crop requires caprification in most climates). Large pyriform figs with greenish-yellow skin, strawberry to amber-colored pulp, few tender seeds. Self-fertile for breba crop, produces mid-summer (late July-early August). Ripens 30-45 days earlier than main crop varieties.

Found growing wild near Madera, California between 1920-1930. Despite California origins, became renowned for cold-climate performance after enthusiasts planted it in northern regions. Now considered essential variety for Pacific Northwest, coastal areas, high elevations, and short-season climates. Produces fruit reliably where heat units insufficient for main-crop figs.
