Originated in Japan. Moderately vigorous tree that can be kept smaller with pruning or dwarfing rootstock.

This tree bears medium to large fruit, light golden-brown russeted skin, tender skin sensitive to bruising. Crisp, crunchy, sweet flesh with especially fine flavor. Ripens mid to late July (earliest-ripening Asian pear variety). Stores 4-6 weeks after harvest. Requires pollinator (Yoinashi or Ishiiwase). Productive tree.

Ichiban Nashi means "First Pear" in Japanese, reflecting its early ripening. First to ripen of all Asian pear varieties, ripening ahead of Shinseiki, Shinsui, and Kosui.
