Dwarf, slow compact growth. Beautiful bright purple figs with flavorful strawberry-colored flesh. Velvety fuzzy leaves and fruit. Ripens October crop in Pacific Northwest where most fail.

Common self-fertile Smyrna type fig (Raintree/Baud strains). Small-medium purple figs with dark red-purple interior. Strong blueberry/blackberry/berry flavor, complex with cherry notes. Drops figs easily when water-stressed - requires consistent moisture, especially in pots. Mature trees (3+ years) more reliable. Late ripening.

First described California 1860, Eisen declared Italian origin 1888, confirmed identical to 'Hirta du Japon' by 1920. Gasparrini named it 'Hirta del Giappone' (of Japan) 1845 for downy fuzz.
