Shanxi Li Jujube (Ziziphus jujuba)

Self-fruitful, good pollinizer for other varieties. May be fairly precocious and productive at young age in variety of climates, though less successful in wet/cool regions. Often less productive than Li but people prefer Shanxi quality. Afternoon blooming type. Smaller stature than standard Li.

Largest jujube variety (over 2 inches diameter). Large round fruit, also called "pear jujube." Very crisp sweet apple-like flavor, sweetens further when dried. Ripens mid-season, may ripen slightly later than Li (September-October). Has harvested viable seed unlike standard Li which virtually never develops seed. Excellent fresh eating and drying.

From Shanxi province China (zones 5-7). At least four distinct Li-type fruits in US including Li, Shanxi Li, Li 2, and Yu.
