It's fall planting season! In the Bay Area it's the perfect time for planting California natives, cool-weather veggies, and fruit trees. The warm soil encourages root development, while cooler air creates less stress on the plants. The need for water is less, but still essential to get those plants established, and the eventual rains help with that task. Growing healthy plants requires growing healthy soils, so don't forget to add fertilizer when planting, and top off with compost and mulch to help protect the newly developing roots.
At the El Sobrante nursery we're getting new orders every week of fall greens and veggies like spinach, beets, and pak choi. Our partners at Sweetwater Nursery supply us with a huge variety of annuals, while our East Oakland location supplies us with perennial veg like tree kale, sunchokes, walking onions, and so much more.
We recently made a trip up north to our friends at California Flora Nursery and brought back a bunch of amazing California native plants. While our big focus in the nursery is on food crops, we're also passionate about native plants and their role in the ecosystem. Native plants are great companions for nearby food crops because they attract pollinators like native bees and hoverflies, as well as beneficial predatory insects that feed on common insect pests.
Come check out some of the cool California native plants from California Flora Nursery we currently have in the El Sobrante Nursery:
- Epilobium 'Chaparral Silver' (California fuschia)
- Vaccinium ovatum (Evergreen huckleberry)
- Eriodictyon californicum (California yerba santa)
- Lupinus sericatus
- Eriogonum crocatum
- Amorpha californica var. napensis
- Salvia mellifera (Black Sage)
- Lilium pardalinum
