Apples

Harriet Tubman, radical abolitionist trailblazer, healer, and freedom fighter, was enslaved on an apple plantation as a child. She made a promise to herself that one day, she would plant her own apple trees for herself, and to share freely with her community. Her ancestors talked about this in many interviews: "[W]hen she bought a piece of land of her own in Auburn, New York, she planted an apple orchard and always had a bowl of apples on her table just for the taking." (see also: An Apple for Harriet Tubman)

We offer a selection of early to late ripening disease resistant varieties for an extended season of apple delight.

Sturdy long-lived trees adapt to a wide variety of climates and soils. They grow 15-20 feet, but can be kept smaller with pruning. We love to eat them fresh, preserved as applesauce, as well as cooked in pies and crisps. We also use any surplus for making delicious fresh cider. Most varieties demand 900 to 1200 hours of temperatures below 45 degrees. Many varieties need at least two for cross-pollination. Grafted on Emla 111 rootstock.
