Ashmead's Kernel apple (Malus domestica) is a popular English heirloom from the 1700s. This variety has remained popular for 100's of years due to it's versatility and tasty, unique flavor. Medium sized fruits have red-orange blush over russetted yellow green skin with crisp aromatic sweet yellow flesh. Trees bare young and are cold tolerant. Ashmead's Kernel apples are great eaten fresh, baked, made into apple sauce, or turned into cider! These trees ripen late and have good disease resistance. Ashmead's Kernel takes a bit longer than some modern varieties to produce fruit (3-4 years), and once it does, cropping can be still be light to average because they can flowers erratically in some climates. However, we think it is well worth the wait, as this antique apple is a lovely, almost pear-like flavor. Our Ashmead Kernel apple trees are certified organic.
